“Life is too short to spend in negativity. So I have made a conscious effort to not be where I don’t want to be.” – Hugh Dillon.

The quote, as well as the photo shoot for this OOTD, goes so well with whatever phase of my life that I am in right now.

For about 25 years of my life, I’ve wanted people’s approval in so many different aspects. It came to a point when I went through a stage of depression. I had a wake up call, thankfully, and was able to turn things around for the better since then.

At 31 years old, I’ve finally realized that you can’t please everybody, AND you shouldn’t try to do so. I think the former was already reiterated and understood during my younger years, but I often spent time and energy in trying to achieve the latter — in trying to please people to keep the peace.

I am opinionated to a fault, and one thing I’m known for is not holding back. I’ve lost acquaintances because of the differences in opinions that we’ve had over religion, politics, and any other topic that people always warn you not to discuss.

But I say discuss it. That’s how you learn and maybe others can learn from you — different perspectives can have a positive outcome if people just learn to empathize and truly understand the other side. There’s the phrase: agree to disagree.

With that long-winded introduction (that was an intro?!?), I finally get to the point — to the meat — of what this whole discourse is: be yourself, speak your truth, and don’t compromise who you are. As long as you are not being rude, condescending, abusive, or ill-mannered, it’s okay. The people who truly matter are the ones who will accept you for who you are.

They may give you “criticism” sometimes, but you know it’s for your own good. They won’t put you down for the sake of being vindictive or abusive — it will always be constructive. And the people who choose to do the opposite need no place in your life. These are the people that you should learn to cut off because your relationship will only bring toxicity to both of your lives.

So, goodbye, to the subservient me!
