Mommy & Me: Blessed

“Easter is meant to be a symbol of hope, renewal, and new life.”

– Janine di Giovanni

He is Risen! Happy Easter everybody!

When I became pregnant with Mia, my doctor told me that I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. It was such a surprise and a blessing that I was able to conceive because women with pcos usually have a difficult time doing so. Our menstruation cycles are different because we usually don’t ovulate. But to our surprise, after a couple of years of trying, I was able to get pregnant with Mia without any medical assistance with hormones and supplements.

All throughout my pregnancy, I had hyperemesis gravidarum and had nausea the entire pregnancy with active vomiting the 1st and 3rd trimesters and part of the 2nd. I was miserable, but the entire time, I was just worried that Mia wasn’t getting nutrients from me because I couldn’t keep down food and whatever I ended up keeping down, I would vomit a few minutes later. I couldn’t even take the prenatal vitamins, and ginger did not work for me either.

She was a healthy 7lb baby when she came into this world, and I was so relieved. But on the day that we were both supposed to be discharged, we were informed that she was going to be admitted into the neonatal intensive care due to ABO incompatibility. She has her dad’s blood type which is not the same as mine, and my blood reacted with hers causing hemolytic anemia. Her red blood cells were being destroyed at a faster rate than she could make them, and she was retaining it and her bilirubin level was elevated — making her jaundiced (yellow). She had to have triple phototherapy treatment. We joked around that she was such a diva because at 1 day old, she was already “sunbathing” with the cool eye covers that we liked to call her “shades.”

With the help of her treatment and her sheer will to fight back, she was able to get rid of the bilirubin by eating constantly and having the bowel movements to get rid of the wastes. After 5 days, she was able to go home with us! We made sure she got her sun to continue lowering her bili levels when we went home.

I’m definitely blessed to be her mother. ☺️
